You Are What You Put On Your Skin

One of the functions of the human skin is that it absorbs anything you rub on it, which then penetrates into the deeper skin tissues entering the capillaries directly to the bloodstream. Our skin absorbs 60% of what it is exposed/applied to it’s surface, in the form of radiation, water, vapor, creams, lotions, airborne pollutants, toxins, dust and dirt.

Because the skin absorbs from the surface into the deeper more sensitive tissues, you must avoid exposure to toxic, damaging substances which harm the skin as well as predispose us to pre-cancerous conditions. The goal is to nourish and protect the skin with natural, biologically active ingredients to support healthy skin and reduce the damage caused by a harsh environment.

We've all been warned about the dangers of sun exposure. However, many are still warming up to the idea of doing something to protect themselves. With skin cancer rates increasing at record pace, we have a simple choice: become sun savvy, or become a statistic.

DANGER IN THE SUN

• Skin cancer is the most common form of all cancers. This year, more people will be diagnosed with skin cancer than all other forms combined.
• One in five Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime.
• Worldwide, 1 person dies from skin cancer every 14 seconds.
• Women under 39 are twice as likely to develop melanoma than men. Starting at age 40, melanoma in men exceeds incidence in women.
• Just one blistering sunburn as a child more than doubles a person's chances of developing skin cancer in their lifetime.
• A person's risk of developing melanoma doubles if they've had five or more sunburns at any age.
• 95% of all skin aging is caused by exposure to the sun's UVA rays.

YOU'RE NOT AS SAFE AS YOU THINK

• Our car windows do not protect us from UVA rays, which cause premature aging and melanoma.
• Tanning beds, a proven human carcinogen, increase the risk of skin cancer as much as 12 times that of sun exposure.
• Clouds only filter 20% of UV rays, meaning that you're still getting burned, even when it's cloudy or raining.
• The reflection of the sun increases 85% from snow reflection, 50% from water reflection, and the sun's reflection doubles with every 2,500' increase in elevation.
• The US FDA only recognizes SPF values up to a maximum of 30. Any sunscreen representing a higher value is not providing higher protection.
• The typical white tee shirt has an SPF of 7.

BETTER RUN FOR COVER

Can skin cancer be prevented? The only way to avoid accelerated skin aging and skin cancer and is to stay out of the sun entirely. Since that's not practical or desirable for most of us, the next best thing is to follow these few simple steps to protect and preserve your skin:

• Wear sunscreen every day, even if it's cloudy or you don't think you'll be out in the sun much.
• Stay out of the sun during peak UV hours, usually 10am – 4pm, or whenever your shadow is shorter than your height.
• Seek the shade. Find a doorway, awning or umbrella to stand under while taking in the view.
• Wear SPF rated clothing. Cover up with tightly knit, but loose fitting clothing, to block out most UV rays.
• Wear a wide-brimmed hat as opposed to a baseball cap in order to protect the ears, sides of the face, and neck from the sun.
• Wear sunglasses with 99-100% UV absorption. This is especially critical if you have light-colored eyes.
• Stay away from tanning beds entirely.
